Making friends at school was easy. As adults, work, family and distance make it surprisingly easy to drift apart from the people who matter most.

We’ve counted down from five to the habit that makes the biggest difference.

5. Do something new together

Join a class, start a book club or take up a sport together. Shared activities create new memories and give you a reason to meet regularly.

It’s also a great way to make new friends along the way.

4. Show up for the big moments

Birthdays, new jobs, house moves and hard times are when friendship counts. A card, a call or simply turning up shows you care.

You don’t need to fix their problems. Being there is enough.

3. Really listen

When you’re together, put your phone away and give your friend your full attention. Ask follow-up questions and remember what they tell you.

Feeling heard is one of the things people value most in a friend.

2. Be the one to reach out

Don’t wait for the other person to get in touch. A quick message saying you thought of them can restart a friendship that has gone quiet.

Most people are delighted to hear from an old friend.

1. Make regular plans

Friendships thrive on routine. A monthly dinner, a weekly walk or a standing phone call means you don’t have to keep finding time from scratch.

Put it in the diary and treat it like any other important appointment. That’s why it’s our number one.

How do you keep in touch with the friends who matter most? Tell us in the comments.
