Getting outside doesn’t have to mean expensive kit or entrance fees. These seven activities need little more than comfortable shoes and a bit of planning.

We’ve counted down from seven to the one we think gives you the most for the least.

7. Fly a kite

A simple kite costs very little and gives hours of fun on a breezy day. Head for an open field or beach, away from trees and power lines.

It’s one of those activities that makes adults feel like children again, in the best possible way.

6. Pick blackberries

In late summer, hedgerows fill with free blackberries. An afternoon of picking ends with crumbles, jams or simply a bowl of fruit.

Only pick what you can identify with total confidence, choose bushes away from busy roads, and leave plenty for wildlife.

5. Pack a picnic

A picnic turns any park, beach or hilltop into a day out. Make sandwiches, bring a blanket and a ball or a frisbee, and the afternoon takes care of itself.

It costs far less than eating out and feels like more of an occasion.

4. Go rock pooling

At low tide, rocky beaches reveal tiny worlds of crabs, anemones, shrimps and starfish. All you need is patience, a bucket and good shoes.

Check the tide times before you go, keep an eye on the incoming tide, and always put creatures and rocks back where you found them.

3. Cycle a quiet route

Dust off the bike and look for traffic-free paths such as canal towpaths and old railway lines turned into cycle routes. They’re flat, safe and often surprisingly scenic.

Take a puncture repair kit and a snack, and plan a café or a picnic spot as your turnaround point.

2. Go stargazing

On a clear night away from street lights, the sky is free entertainment. Let your eyes adjust for twenty minutes and you’ll see far more stars than you expected.

A free stargazing app will help you name constellations and planets, and a pair of ordinary binoculars reveals even more.

1. Explore a local walking trail

Most of us live close to footpaths, nature reserves or country parks we’ve never properly explored. Pick a circular route of a few miles, pack a flask, and see somewhere new on your own doorstep.

Free mapping apps and local council websites list routes for every level, which makes this the easiest adventure there is.
