If the thought of a gym leaves you cold, the answer might be to find movement you actually enjoy. These five hobbies get you moving without it ever feeling like a workout.
We’ve counted down from five to the one we think is the most fun of all. If you’re new to exercise or have a health condition, check with your GP before you start.
5. Disc golf
Disc golf is like golf, but you throw a frisbee-style disc into a metal basket instead of hitting a ball into a hole. Many parks have free courses.
It’s a relaxed walk with a game built in, and a starter disc costs very little.
4. Badminton
Badminton is easy to pick up, and a friendly game soon gets everyone laughing and running around. Leisure centres hire out courts and rackets.
Play doubles with friends for a sociable, competitive hour that doesn’t feel like training.
3. Stand-up paddleboarding
Paddleboarding on a calm lake or river works your balance and core while you enjoy the view. It’s easier to learn than it looks.
Book a lesson with a qualified instructor to start, always wear a buoyancy aid, and check conditions before you head out.
2. Bouldering
Bouldering is climbing on short walls without ropes, over thick crash mats. Each route is a puzzle to solve, so you’ll be too busy thinking to notice how hard your muscles are working.
Most climbing centres offer beginner sessions and shoe hire, and the community is famously friendly.
1. Dancing
Whether it’s salsa, swing, ballroom or a beginners’ Zumba class, dancing is fun, sociable and gets your heart going without you noticing.
Most classes welcome complete beginners, and you don’t need a partner to join. It’s our number one because it’s the hobby people are most likely to stick with.
