Online dating is how many couples meet today, and the vast majority of matches are exactly who they say they are. A few simple habits keep you safe while you find out.
We’ve counted down from seven to the safety tip we’d never skip.
7. Watch your drink
Keep your drink with you and don’t accept drinks you didn’t see being poured.
If you suddenly feel unwell or much drunker than you should, ask venue staff for help straight away.
6. Check that they're real
A quick search of their name and a reverse image search of their photos can reveal fake profiles that use stolen pictures.
If the details don’t add up, trust your instincts and step back.
5. Never send money
However convincing the story, never send money or gift cards to someone you’ve met online, especially if you haven’t met in person.
Requests for money are one of the clearest signs of a romance scam. Report the profile to the app.
4. Keep personal details private at first
Hold back your home address, workplace and other personal details until you know someone better and trust them.
Be careful with photos that show where you live or work, too.
3. Arrange your own transport
Get yourself to and from the date so you can leave whenever you want. Don’t accept a lift home from someone you’ve only just met.
Keep your phone charged and know how you’re getting home.
2. Video call before you meet
A short video call confirms the person looks like their photos and gives you a feel for them before you commit to an evening.
If someone keeps finding excuses to avoid a video call, treat it as a warning sign.
1. Meet in public and tell a friend
For the first few dates, always meet somewhere busy and public, such as a café, bar or popular park. Avoid going to someone’s home or inviting them to yours.
Tell a friend who you’re meeting, where and when, and agree to message them during or after the date. Many dating apps also let you share your date details directly.
